Because we are interested in multiply scattered waves at ultrasonic frequencies, it is better to not touch the sample, while doing the measurement. In the lab, we do this by using lasers to excite and detect ultrasonic waves. In the field, we rely on a parametric array and millimeter-wave vibrometry (see this paper).
